As finding untouched open space becomes a rarity in our developed society, preservation areas are becoming increasingly valuable. People from all over the world visit California to enjoy its natural beauty. Like Santa Barbara, many of the popular tourist destinations overlap with the California Tiger Salamander’s critical habitat. In 2014 alone, Santa Barbara drew in nearly $2 billion from the tourism industry (Nevis, 2015). If we continue to eliminate the natural beauty which distinguish and enhance counties such as Santa Barbara, Sonoma, and Marin, significantly less tourists will have a desire to visit these locations. If we save the California Tiger Salamander, we also save the habitat they thrive in. If we can save their habitat, each county’s economy can continue to rely on tourism as a source of revenue.
